The JBJS MRC Oxford Diploma in Adult Trauma Surgery provides a structured, evidence-based review of contemporary orthopaedic trauma practice.
The programme covers the full spectrum of adult trauma care, from polytrauma resuscitation and damage control orthopaedics through definitive fracture fixation, pelvic and acetabular trauma, peri-articular injuries, complications, non-union management and limb reconstruction principles.

Course Curriculum
The curriculum runs from principles and pelvic trauma through the upper and lower limbs, with a dedicated wrist session and a final module on non-union, periprosthetic fracture, infection and geriatric trauma. MODULE 1
PRINCIPLES & POLYTRAUMA
(4 sessions)
Damage control orthopaedics and the physiology of injury; open fractures and the orthoplastic approach; compartment syndrome, vascular injury and the mangled extremity; fracture biology, healing and the principles of fixation.
MODULE 2
PELVIS & ACETABULUM
(2 sessions)
Pelvic ring injuries from acute resuscitation through definitive percutaneous and open fixation; acetabular fractures from Letournel classification through surgical approaches, fixation and acute total hip arthroplasty in the elderly.
MODULE 3
UPPER LIMB TRAUMA
(3 sessions)
Clavicle, scapula, proximal humerus and humeral shaft; distal humerus, elbow and forearm; a dedicated session on distal radius and wrist injuries.
Carpal injuries are covered in the Hand Diploma.
MODULE 4
LOWER LIMB TRAUMA
(5 sessions)
Hip fractures (intracapsular and extracapsular); femoral shaft and ipsilateral neck-shaft fractures; distal femur and knee periarticular trauma; tibial plateau, shaft and pilon fractures; ankle and foot trauma including Lisfranc.
MODULE 5
COMPLICATIONS & SPECIAL POPULATIONS
(4 sessions)
Non-union and malunion reconstruction; periprosthetic fractures; fracture-related infection; geriatric trauma, frailty and fragility fractures (including sacral insufficiency and fragility pelvic ring injuries).
Assessment & Certification
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Inc. is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
WEEKLY MCQs & FINAL
SINGLE-BEST-ANSWER PAPER
Weekly formative MCQs allow delegates to track their progress and consolidate learning. The diploma concludes with a summative Single Best Answer paper assessing knowledge across the full curriculum.
FINAL WRITTEN ASSESSMENT
(THREE 1,500 WORD ESSAYS)
Delegates will submit 1,500-word essays on three topics relating to the content taught in the Adult Trauma curriculum. Topics will be assigned in January 2027, with essays due in February 2027.
DIPLOMA
& ACCREDITATION
On successful completion of this JBJS MRC Oxford Diploma, delegates receive a digital certificate of completion and may be able to claim AMA PRA Category 1™ Credit.
