The JBJS MRC Oxford Diploma in Shoulder & Elbow Surgery provides a structured, evidence-based review of the diagnosis and management of the full range of shoulder and elbow disorders.

The programme covers the soft-tissue and rotator cuff spectrum, shoulder instability and the throwing shoulder, arthritis, arthroplasty and stiffness, the injured shoulder girdle, and the complete elbow curriculum — from anatomy and biomechanics through instability, trauma, arthritis and arthroplasty. Teaching is delivered by internationally recognised experts in shoulder and elbow surgery through live online seminars, interactive case discussions and examination-focused learning.

Programme Structure:

Format: Online (Live Teaching with On-Demand Access — live via Zoom, recorded to Moodle)

Sessions: 25 Weekly Expert-Led Online Seminars across 5 modules

When: Every Tuesday at 6:00pm (UK Time)

Course Dates: 17 November 2026 through to May 2027. Final diploma examination Tuesday 25 May 2027. (Breaks: 22 and 29 December 2026.)

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Assess and manage rotator cuff pathology across the spectrum — from subacromial pain and calcific tendinitis to massive, irreparable tears — selecting repair, transfer, reconstruction and arthroplasty strategies on current evidence.
• Evaluate and treat the unstable shoulder, quantifying glenoid and humeral bone loss and applying the glenoid-track concept to choose between arthroscopic stabilisation, Latarjet and bone-block procedures.
• Plan anatomic and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for arthritis, cuff-tear arthropathy, fracture and revision, and recognise and manage periprosthetic fracture and infection.
• Manage injuries of the shoulder girdle — proximal humerus, clavicle, scapula, acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints, and the brachial plexus — from nonoperative care to complex reconstruction.
• Diagnose and manage the full range of elbow disorders, including instability and fracture-dislocation, the throwing elbow and UCL injury, epicondylopathy and tendon injury, stiffness, arthritis and arthroplasty.
• Prepare for fellowship and board examinations (FRCS Tr & Orth, EBOT) through structured, case-based teaching.

Module 1: Shoulder — Soft Tissue and Rotator Cuff

• Rotator Cuff Disease: Natural History, Partial and Full-Thickness Tears
• Massive and Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears
• Calcific Tendinitis, Subacromial Pain Syndrome and AC Joint Pathology
• Long Head of Biceps: Tenotomy versus Tenodesis

Module 2: Shoulder — Instability and the Throwing Shoulder

• Anterior Shoulder Instability and Bone Loss Assessment
• Latarjet, Bone Block and Glenoid Reconstruction
• Posterior and Multidirectional Instability
• SLAP, Proximal Biceps and the Throwing Shoulder
• Scapular Dyskinesis, SICK Scapula and Return to Play

Module 3: Shoulder — Arthritis, Arthroplasty and Stiffness

• Glenohumeral OA, Cuff Tear Arthropathy and the Inflammatory Shoulder
• Anatomic Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: Planning, Technique and Outcomes
• Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: Biomechanics, Technique, Expanding Indications
• Periprosthetic Fracture, Infection and Revision Shoulder Arthroplasty
• Adhesive Capsulitis and Post-Surgical Stiffness

Module 4: Shoulder — Trauma

• Proximal Humerus Fractures: Nonoperative to ORIF
• Reverse and Hemiarthroplasty for Trauma and Fracture Sequelae
• Clavicle and Scapula Fractures
• Acromioclavicular and Sternoclavicular Joint Injuries
• Brachial Plexus Injury and Failed Trauma Reconstruction

Module 5: Elbow

• Elbow Anatomy, Biomechanics, Examination, Imaging and Arthroscopy
• Lateral and Medial Epicondylopathy, Distal Biceps and Distal Triceps
• Throwing Elbow, UCL Injury and Tommy John
• Elbow Instability: Simple, Complex, Terrible Triad and Fracture-Dislocations
• Distal Humerus, Radial Head, Olecranon, Elbow Stiffness, Arthritis and Arthroplasty

KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT

• Weekly formative MCQs allow delegates to track their progress and consolidate learning. (Weekly, November 2026 to May 2027)
• Summative Single Best Answer paper assessing knowledge across the full curriculum. (Due May 2027)
• Written Essays: Delegates will submit 1,500-word essays on three topics relating to the content taught in the Shoulder & Elbow curriculum. Topics will be assigned in April 2027, with essays due in May 2027.

CERTIFICATE & ACCREDITATION

On successful completion of this JBJS MRC Oxford Diploma, delegates receive a digital certificate of completion.
