The Royal College of Surgeons of England has awarded up to 26 CPD points for this one year programme. The course will include approximately 25 allocated weekly one-hour sessions, usually on a Monday evening at 20:00, allowing time off for the Summer, Easter and Winter vacation breaks as well as Bank Holidays.

All lecturers will give a mixture of learned review of the literature, practical operative tips and case-based discussion.
FIRST TERM Modules including:

• Anatomy of the Hip – what you really need to know and relevance to surgical approaches

• Biomechanics of the Hip – why does it work so effectively? What are the relevant forces and what is their relevance? • The childhood hip; common conditions demystified; a common sense approach • Femoral trauma – classifications, understanding fracture patterns, common treatment strategies • Acetabular trauma – when do we fix? When can we leave? How do we approach? When do we reconstruct and how? • Paediatric trauma – unique differences versus the adult hip; when do we operate? How do we follow up? Any special concerns? • Key surgical approaches for Hip Surgery – when, how, why? Relevant hazards and top tips and tricks • Young adult hip / osteotomies / hip preservation; preventing future complications; relevant investigations • Hip arthroscopy; demystifying this potentially complex procedure; aims; intended benefits; operative approach; positioning; equipment • All you need to know about Biomechanics of the Hip and an Introduction to Tribology

What you will learn:

All important aspects of Hip Surgery for the senior trainee / newly appointed consultant and will include:

• Key aspects of anatomy • Diagnostic workup of common hip pathology • An understanding of appropriate investigations i.e. radiology • Major conditions i.e. Young Adult Hip conditions, the treatment of Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hip Trauma, Treatment of Sports Hip conditions • Additionally, specific aspects of treatment including hip arthroscopy, hip replacement surgery, current controversies, revision hip surgery, peri-prosthetic fracture surgery, etc.

We will also have lectures on key aspects of surgical technique, complex decision making, follow up and rehabilitation, future advances. An understanding of these items will be assessed with weekly MCQ quizzes and then a written examination at the end of the course.

The equivalent course in Orthopaedic Oncology has been hugely successful with over 200 delegates participating weekly online.
